Crossing borders: Get a passport, and an attorney

For all but the simplest immigration tasks, it's generally advisable to navigate immigration-related legal issues with an attorney's help.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors and immigrants come to the United States each year. It's estimated that two million others are waiting in line for permission to permanently relocate.

There has been recent major changes to immigration laws. Anyone wishing to visit, work or live in the United States is bound by federal immigration law. It determines who can be considered an alien, their rights and obligations, and how aliens can become naturalized citizens.

Histories of criminal or terrorist activities, drug abuse, infectious medical problems, or certain other characteristics or behavior will deny access to a visa or green card. Everyone applying to enter or stay in the United States, no matter how long their stay, is checked to see if he or she is inadmissible on these grounds.

You may need the services of an immigration lawyer if you are:

Moving to the United States to take a job or study at a U.S. college or university

The spouse or fiancé of a U.S. citizen

Immigrating to the United States, and you want to live permanently in the United States

You want to stay an extended length of time in the United States for work or personal reasons (such as travel or vacation)

Working to solve immigration-related issues with visas, passports or other legal documents can be complex and confusing. For all but the simplest immigration tasks (such as applying for a passport), it's generally advisable to navigate immigration-related legal issues with an attorney's help.
