Great Place!
This is a great hair salon. It offers students discounts and it is located in a very convenient location. I don't know what's up with the two negative comments I just read, because I have never seen the salon dirty or poorly lit. At least not at the location on St. Charles. I get amazing highlights and the haircuts look exactly like the pictures I bring insometimes even better. People always compliment me on my haircut and I would recommend this salon to all my friends.

Disastrous Do
Let me begin my stating that I created an account for the sole purpose of writing this review. I've had a few not so great haircuts in the past, but none so horrid as this. First of all, I was treated as if my haircut didn't matter. The place was packed (and dingy). Also, I went in for a trim and was very clear/explicit about this. However, I left with very short hair. He cut off over six inches! Why did he even ask me what I wanted if he was just going to do whatever he pleased? Additionally, he didn't even dry my hair himself but had an assistant do it. It was so ugly I cried as soon as I got out of the door.

john jay= nightmare
i have never written a review for anything, but i had such a horrible experience at john jay (similiar to the one above), that i had to write about it. all i wanted was to lighten my hair a little bit, first they stripped the color from my hair (this took hours and was a huge knotted mess afterwards) then poured toner all over it. My hair came out orange, fried and destroyed. they refused to refund my money and never even returned my phone call after i was assured mr jay would call me back. The salon is dirty, poorly lit and overpriced. I ended up spending another 100$ to fix the damage that was done. The place that i went to could not believe what she had done and how they let me walk out with my hair like that, let alone charge me. I do not reccomend this place, it doesnt even deserve one star.

Could be better
It's all about location, as the saying goes. This salon is definitely about location. Boasting a swanky uptown clientele, this full service salon is often bustling. However, the service is not as stellar as salon owner John Jay would have you think. I was a faithful customer for four years and in that time I was often kept waiting 20 minutes plus to be washed. It was a normal occurence for my stylist to be running at least 15 minutes late, but if I was five minutes late she would let me have it. I would also think after four years the stylists would stop looking at me crazy hen I say who I'm seeing (i'm black and most clients are not). Basically - it's not all it's cracked up to be!

It's brilliant!
I've been all over the United States-- lived in Boston, Greensboro, Charlotte, Pennsylvania, and I thought about moving to the west coast. My old roommate from college works at John Jay's, and she is the best hairstylist I've ever been to (she's that crazy tall redhead). I've done every color of the rainbow, and she worked some magic on my crazy hair every time I come to visit! John Jay's Salon is so welcoming and friendly, I can't believe some of the treatment I've had in the past at other salons. From the estheticians to the shampoo girls to the receptionists (and even big blustery John Jay himself!), I didn't have a single negative thing I could say about any of them. New Orleans is so lucky to have it--I wish I lived here (ok, so the food's a big draw, too)! Thanks, John Jay!

All around disappointing
I went to John Jay once and spent 14 hours at the salon over two days while a colorist tried to get my hair blonde. (I had light brownish-blonde hair and was trying to go a little lighter). She failed and I ended up having to die it dark brown just so it wasn't bright orange. And she charged more than she'd originally said, even though the results were terrible and I lost a day at the salon.
I thought it was just a fluke with a bad stylist, but I went back today. Due to a scheduling error, my stylist treated me like I was at a factory. She rushed my color while she worked on three of us at once. Then they put toner on my hair that made my scalp burn and was dripping into my eyes. I tried to tell someone, but no one was free to help me and no one came to check on me. My stylist then gave me the worst haircut I've ever had. It was an inch and half longer on one side than the other and longer in the back than the front giving me something that resembled a mis-shapen mullet. (trust me, it was NOT anything close to what I asked for). They had no time to dry it, so I went home to dry it myself. When I found out my cut was wrong, and my color was off, I was too disappointed to even want to go back and ask them to fix it. I'm not wasting another 14 hours there and ending up with something I DON"T want. On top of everything, the salon is chaotic, dirty, lit with bad flourescent lighting-- all in all not relaxing or salon-like at all. Just trying to warn you all-- don't waste your money here!!!!!

Wonderful experience
I have gone to John Jay for about 3 years now. The staff is friendly. Casey is wonderful in coloring hair and sees that you always get the most for the money you spend. I wanted to go darker and hated it, but they took me back the next day and gave me the color I wanted for no extra charge. This is a great place where quality service is provided and where no one pressures you to buy products or try anything you don't really want to do.

horrible hair color
I went there last week- and went for highlights and low light and my HAIR came out YELLOW! i have brunette hair and I always have subtle highlights- Jay knows that- and i came out of there with "Skunk streaks" and looked so tacky and platium blond.. NOT what i asked for. THEY charged me for it- and wouldn't change it bc 'they didn't have time to.' my appt. was also an HOUR late- and it was with Jay himself. DO NOT GO THERE.

Friendly staff, beautiful color!
I've been going to John Jay for color and blow-outs for a few months now since moving here from out-of-state and I am very pleased with the staff and my highlights. Janet and Corey (sp?) in particular have always gone above and beyond for me, making me feel like a valued client. They always work me in and I have never been pressured to buy products, which is a big plus for me.
